300 Review
‘300′ is a fine spectacle for the eyes.
It’s based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel about 300 Spartans who stood against a million Persians descending upon them. King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) makes every other guy on earth feels ashamed about their bodies.
This movie has a very hot though brief sex scene.
But the best part is the oracle dancing on air ever so smoothly.
it is made in such remarkable graphics and visual effects..
It is so violent yet so sexy.. we can appreciate how committed this film is to providing us with action sequences and a story that both male and some female audiences can cheer on.
Some of us are familiar with the history that this particular film is based on.
But basing it more on Frank Miller’s graphic novel adds the value of its entertainment.
no, this is not something you’d take your little cousins to… but it’s definitely fun to watch it with a gang of friends.
But the story sounds all too familiar… it sounds like a propaganda… it sounds a lot like what’s happening in the real world today..
keeping in mind that this month will be 4 years since Pres. Bush deployed U.S. troops to Iraq.
This month of March, it will be 4 years since this bloody war got started.
But let’s not compare King Leonidas to Pres. Bush, shall we?
because unlike Leonidas… you will never see Pres. Bush fighting on the frontline
It’s pretty cool movie overall, but here are 3 of my bottomline objections:
1. The movie seems to advice the audience to support the war, and those who don’t, come out as traitor or unpatriotic, this movie’s political agenda, which is not even subtle, has a close timing to 4th anniversary of the war in Iraq.
2. it’s nothing original and by that I mean the fighting sequences are ‘The Matrix’-like kinda fighting.
3. It comes across as overly-dramatic, with all the speeches and all.

If you want to be technical, you could argue that it was Saddam Hussein who started this war 15 years ago when he invaded Kuwait. The invasion by America in 2003 was just a continuation of that war.
You could also make the argument that no matter how bloody you think the war in Iraq is, it has actually saved lives.
I know the comparisons in 300 to the current situation in Iraq makes liberals very uneasy. In 300, Leonidas is betrayed by his own countrymen who are unwilling to take action when action is the only option. That is pretty much what is going on now with Iraq. Half the country seems to think that just leaving Iraq will solve all our problems. Such a stance is a byproduct of ignorance and/or wishful thinking. Not to mention…most of the people against the war now used to be for the war. Unfortunately, rather than make honest arguments about how the Iraqi invasion was a mistake, many resort to name-calling and out right lies. The idea that “Bush lied” is an outright lie. Bush can not fake intelligence from the CIA, let alone every intelligence agency in the world. The man who was in charge of the CIA when we went to war with Iraq was appointed by Clinton. Therefore, Bill Clinton must have been in on the Bush plan to invade Iraq for quite some time. The whole argument is utterly retarded.
I have gone on the website rottentomatoes.com and read some of the reactions to this movie. There can be no doubt that it is making some of these reviewers feel guilty. One reviewer even used the famous liberal like “too much black and white when history is many shades of grey.” Such a statement about a movie based on a comic can only be the result of guilt. I digress…
As for the movie, it was decent. The action was awesome, but the queen was a whore and not very likable. I also didn’t like the way they ended it. For the sake of your legions of readers, I won’t say what it is because I hate it when people ruin the end of movies!
BTW…I think that i pretty much agree with your grade of the movie. What I didn’t like was the seemingly out of place sex. Sex for the sake of sex in movies annoys me. Keep porn and action movies seperate. That’s my mantra. 300 had a problem with that as far as I’m concerned.
Imagine Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, or Saving Private Ryan with a random sex scene in it. It would have ruined those movies. I’m also not a fan of women characters in war movies…especially when they turn out to be big whores.
wow there is no similarities with Iraq unless its that they stood up to a much larger army and held their ground for a little while.
beside the point that i would be considered a “liberal” this did not make me shudder because there is no similarities with iraq. To compare Leonidas with Bush is the most absurd argument ive EVER heard. Leonidas was a real leader/real man who actually LED his men into battle to defend his way of life. Bush ORDERED troops to iraq to help his oil hungry vice president, who has made literally HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars by this war so don’t not lie to yourself about the truth about the war. you don’t “stumble” into bad information that makes you in excess of $250,000,000 by mistake and then keep trying to tell the nation that iraq is a staging point for terrorist.
But 300 is an amazing movie and the artistic direction was amazing, it will win some awards next year that is for sure.
I fail to see how this relates to Iraq. One Saddam didn’t have thousands upon thousands of soldiers to put forth in front of the American troops. We did not have 300 men to fight the war. No way did Saddam say come join and bow to me and I’ll give you everything you desire. I fail to see the relationship. To put the movie into context with Iraq is not really thinking. The idea of “Never Surrender” brought in by the movie, is not contextual to our problem. We are not surrendering to Iraq. We are more like the Persians in this context of “Come Join Us”, but then again it doesn’t fit. We are not making them Citizens.
Its the same as saying Happy Feet is propaganda for implanting Global Warming. Maybe it is…maybe it isn’t. Movies do influence, but you need to take the time to do your research and make the choice on your own. In all actuality I see it as a good vs. evil battle. The Persians enticing you with anything you want. All you have to do is just bow down. Where the Spartans battled for their freedom. This story has been told over many a times it is not anything new.
Back to the movie it is a wonderful spectacle…Jack Snyder is like the new Quentin Tarantino. I would give it a 4 out of 5. One the acting was not great, but I do have to give them props for the amazing workout they had to do. Also the blood looked fake and did not splatter on the people. They looked clean most of the time. I do like the creativity and to realize that this movie was shot 90% green screen takes a lot of work and effort. It creates a comic style cinematography with real people.
Whether or not you see the comparisons is irrelevant. They have been seen by many reviewers. Go to rottentomatoes.com.
and yes…I’ll try to “don’t not lie” to myself.
back to the comparisons of Iraq with 300…it isn’t supposed to be as literal as you are trying to make it. no we did not send 300 troops to Iraq to defeat millions of Iraqis. that isn’t the point.
the point is that the Spartans were supposedly defending freedom and their king had to do so without popular support of power hungry/political maneuvering politicians. Like it or not, that comparison is at least debatable.
Well away from this techincology, I have to say that I like and at the same time disliked this movie, it had really great fight scenes, but as for the story line, is is given to you so fast that you really don’t have a chance to really know what is going on. Well overall it did keep me in my chair, but if I knew that it was going to be a movie like this, I would of not handed over the $10 charge for the movie, and just would of waited for it to come out on video.
Hmmmm. Let’s see. A movie, based on a book, based on an actual event in ancient greece = America vs. Iraq! Imma genious! For the record. Do some google homework. Saddam broke MANY parts of the peace treaty made to end gulf war 1 (range his misiles could shoot is one portion of the treaty I know he broke). We had every right to invade iraq after he broke the peace treaty. And do a search for the article written by the New York Times, where Saddam’s own Generals came to him requesting WMD’s for use against us in the begenning of Gulf war 2. Saddams response was that the WMD’s had been destroyed. If his GENERALS didn’t even know that the WMD’s had been destroyed how was ANYONE supposed to know?
I’m done son!
