10 Great Movies about Musicians

El Cantante
This Friday (August 3), the movie El Cantante will sing in theaters everywhere. It’s a movie with Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez about the true story of a Puerto Rican singer’s life from his arrival to New York to his death from AIDS.
So I figured I compile for you a list of movies,… at least the movies I’ve seen, that are about musicians. Some of them may not be necessarily accurate, but they are filmmakers’ attempt to tell the story of passionate artists that have come and gone.

10). SELENA

Ever wonder how worldwide popular Selena would be if her life hadn’t been cut short by that stupid manager?
9). LA BAMBA

The movie about Ritchie Valens with the movie title based on one of the catchiest songs I’ve ever heard in my life
8). DE-LOVELY

Cole Porter was a great songwriter and not so great a singer. But Kevin Kline who’s a better singer than he is a songwriter did an excellent portrayal of Porter.
7). THE PIANIST

This movie’s about the struggle to survive, about how one musicians through music could gain the sympathy of a Nazi officer.
6). BIRD

This is reaffirms the fact that Clint Eastwood is an awesome director, and Forest Whittaker is an awesome actor. In this movie, Forest plays “Yardbird” the jazz saxophonist.
5). THE DOORS

Val Kilmer’s look resembles Jim Morrison and director Oliver Stone’s take on the Doors just goes to show how twisted Jim’s life must’ve been.
4). WALK THE LINE

“Hello, I’m Johnny Cash!” Rock n Roll’s original badass! Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon give respectful tributes to the lives of two legendary couple.
3). SHINE

The story of music and madness. Keep your eyes on those fast fingers dancing on the piano keys
2). RAY

Jamie Foxx proves that he’s more than just ‘Booty Call’. A great depiction of the life of Ray Charles and his fight against his demons.
1). AMADEUS

I love this movie particularly because it tells a story of an amazing composer who penned music only because he loved music and nothing else. He didn’t care if he never got paid for his music and he enjoyed life like a rebel.

I only have one question…Will this movie be just as “good” as Gigli? It better be better, because so far, history has proven that making videos or movies with a current boyfriend or husband always turns out to be a flop.
