ARCTIC TALE Review

This is a very touching documentary movie about two lives: the polar bear Nanu and The walrus pup Sheela. This movie takes us on on a journey that these two living creatures embark. The joy of family and the hardship of trying to survive. In my opinion, it is not as well made as March of the Penguin, it looks more like the things we normally see on national geographic channel and discovery channel but this time magnified to fit the big screen. But still… ARCTIC TALE has a more straight to heart story that’s both earnest and relevant and it serves as a wake up call.
The story starts with the beginning of Nanu and Sheela and how they grow up, how they train to get their food and how much they depend on their mother. After two years Nanu has to part ways from mother bear and though Sheela still has her family, both Nanu and Sheela are now faced with the same problem: the time of the forming of the ice is now all out of whack because the earth gets warmer and warmer every year. Their old tradition and ways of getting food to survive is now threatened. The rightful owners of Arctic now become the refugees.
Queen Latifah does an excellent job of narrating the story and props to the folks that went beyond their comfortable zone to bring us stunning images and actual shots of the harsh condition of wildlife in the Arctic. This whole global warming thing should by now have enough weapons to slap us all in the face for having been ignorant all these years. Yes, polar bears and walrus are just animals but what a sad world it would be if they’re not around for our children to appreciate and cherish. Even worse, the bad news that the wildlife experience right now may become a bad news to our existence as well.
ARCTIC TALE is a must-see movie for everyone of every age.
