When you say the word ’sad’, it could mean many things. A lonely man who thinks that a sex-doll is his girfriend, now that is sad! LARS AND THE REAL GIRL is what we’d consider dramedy, a combo of drama and comedy. Indie movies like this one might seem hilarious in the previews or trailers but… most of the time, the whole feature is nothing short of depressing, as usual.

Lars (Gosling) is a kind-hearted man living in a small town that cares about him. One day he brings home a girl for the first time ever and introduces her to his brother and sister in-law. To their surprise, the girl is a sex doll Lars ordered from the internet. The question now is how they’re going to respond to Lars’ condition.

Yes, it is funny to see a delusional man who kills his loneliness by loving a sex doll, but at the same time, it is creepy and disturbing and he would probably be admitted to mental hospital in real life.
The winning factor of the movie comes in how the whole family and community all agree to help in the healing process by participating and accepting his condition, in this case, embracing his ‘weird’ girlfriend.
Those of you who want to see slapstick humor and expect something out of Judd Apatow film can just forget about it because this ain’t it because you’d find this so boring, you’ll get so pissed off you’d want your money and an hour and forty-six minutes back.
But if you’re one of those who are into sweet tale of coping with being different, an original movie that makes something good out of something delusional, then you’d find LARS AND THE REAL GIRL heartfelt, sincere, and you’d wish that everyone could treat each other as kindly as that community treated Lars.
Ryan Gosling’s performance is excellent as the character Lars. Most of us know how horrible it feels to be by yourself even when surrounded by hundreds of people, Ryan captures that exact emotion and even more.
