BEOWULF 3-D Review

beowulf
Watching Angelina Jolie come out of the water in all her glory through the eyes of our 3-D glasses is quite the treat. Though it it’s not really her body, it’s just motion capture performance CGI, it’s still powerful enough to… lure kings of the earth and bring them to their knees. Director Robert Zemeckis has once again delivered another fantasy adventure to follow up the success of ‘The Polar Express’, which I enjoyed very much. BEOWULF 3-D is a movie watching experience like no other. The technology is impressive, the action sequences are breathtaking, and it’s just fun, fun, fun.

A kingdom in Denmark is terrorized by the monster Grendel. The king (Hopkins) hires Beowulf (Winstone) to do the task of killing the monster. Beowulf is unaware that the king has a secret from the past that would bring curse onto Beowulf for years to come.

A couple of months ago, I was at a movie theater waiting in the line to buy popcorn when there was this woman pointing at the movie poster of Beowulf and said to her friends, “That man is hot”. I laughed because I knew that the man behind Beowulf is none other than the fat, old Ray Winstone. If you don’t know who Ray is, you can see him in the movie The Departed, playing Jack Nicholson’s right hand man, Ray is also in an Australian Western movie with Guy Pearce called The Proposition, and Ray can next be seen in Indiana Jones 4.

* This is the technology they use for Beowulf 3-D to capture Jolie’s performance.

beowulf

It’s a movie about sins of the fathers, how a hero are just as human and as vulnerable as the people he tries to save. It’s about how lust can take over the will of even the strongest person and the lust for power and glory can blind a man into doing something regretful for the rest of his life. Mistakes of the past always, always have a way of coming back to collect the debt.

I like the 3-D CGI aspect of this movie, the images pop out and at times they makes you feel like you’re a part of the movie itself, not to mention the audiences get to go home with those 3-D glasses. I had to read the story back in high school and didn’t like it then, all I can say is that I would remember much about it if it was as thrilling as the movie version, but I don’t think they’re alike.
My only complaint is that it could’ve been done in a shorter time instead of 1 hour and 53 minutes. An animated epic this long could only make those glasses even more uncomfortable to use.
I don’t think you’ll be missing out if you don’t watch this movie, and if you do watch this movie, I don’t think you’ll regret that you did.

Animated movies always seem to be good, except for the ones that try too hard. Anyway I will probably see this movie sometime after Christmas, it’s too busy right now for me to go to the theater, that and I’m trying to get into good shape and all. =) This is definitely on my list of must sees along with Bee movie.
