Rama’s SCREEN

27 DRESSES Review

I always knew Katherine Heigl would make the perfect movie star ever since that short lived TV series Roswell. Because I think she has the face and the persona for the big screen. People would pay to see her movies not only because she is a talented, beautiful actress, she also… has a pretty good range one second you’d see her being dramatic, which means upset, emotion, and tears all roll into one…and suddenly in another second she turns silly, bumbling in a Pink Panther type of way. All she needs now is the right project and 27 DRESSES just isn’t it.

Jane has always been the perfect bridesmaid. She could plan a wedding like no one else but poor Jane has yet to feel what it feels to be the Bride. Kevin is the writer for New York Journal hired to write an article about everything that has to do with wedding. When Jane’s sister Tess gets engaged to George, the man Jane is in love with. she just knows that she’s going to be asked to do everything even when it’s not easy.

This movie is for those who love chick flick and don’t care whether or not it’s effective as a romantic comedy. 27 DRESSES got more than over 27 punch lines that are mostly miss instead of hit. You’d sit there in the theaters knowing that what the characters say are meant to be funny but you’re not laughing, not even a smile.. but like I said, those of you don’t care would enjoy it because you’re probably the kind of audience who get easily amused. The same type of viewer who think the movie License to Wed is amazing.

It’s hard to see Katherine Heigl in this movie after her success with the movie Knocked Up. I know it’s not fair to compare the two because the latter had Judd Apatow overseeing everything. Maybe 27 DRESSES’ marketing strategy of telling the whole world that the movie’s brought to you from the screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada might not be such a good idea. Because I’ve read the book and I saw the movie version and I’m just glad Meryl Streep was in there to save that boat from sinking any deeper.

27 DRESSES has your typical romantic comedy storyline, especially those with the plot where a girl and a guy hate each other’s gut at first but after a while, they find something in common and the next thing you know… happily ever after.
I do think the ending is nice touch where all the girls lined up as bridesmaids wearing all the different dresses. Oops… I didn’t mean to ruin it for you there.

Ya know how some romantic comedies would have the girl gets angry at a guy because she find out that she’s just a bet and he’s been using her all this time. Well.. this movie has that factor too, not quite exactly the same but it’s very close. Typical, right?

There’s a scene where Kevin (Marsden) and Jane (Heigl) are in a bar and they get so drunk they start dancing and singing Elton John’s “Bennie and The Jets”.
No disrespect to Sir Elton John, I think he’s an extraordinary musician.. but who in the world remembers that song anymore these days, let alone memorizes every line in the lyrics?!
I think Adam Sandler and Kate Bekinsale song selection ‘Linger’ by The Cranberries in the movie Click certainly felt much more romantic. Okay maybe that’s not similar scene…
Tom Cruise and the rest of the Top Gun guys singing the song ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’.. now that song is memorable, people still remember that.

I feel bad for actor Edward Burns who plays George in this movie, he used to be top notch, playing with big names in movie Saving Private Ryan and the heist movie Confidence. Now he’s doing this and he’s also in One Missed Call. His career is heading downhill and the sad thing is he doesn’t even know it.

So we can cross out acting, directing, visuals and storyline. I sure hope Katherine will find a better project to do after this because she clearly has potential.
Do you know my only favorite part of this movie is? Let’s just say that Katherine’s character, Jane commits something unconventional… while other romantic comedies would have the guy professing his love at the last minute to the girl, you’d see him running, fighting through the crowds and catching her inside an airplane in time before the flight takes off … well… in this one, Jane’s the one in front of the microphone announcing her feelings for Kevin.
I find that very unusual.. and for that I think that one scene is…cute.
