FIRST SUNDAY Review

First Sunday
FIRST SUNDAY welcomes all but the church is empty. I really thought this movie was going to bcrack me up but I got fooled by the trailer which has shown practically all the funny parts of the movie so… when you hear the punch lines again, it’s not that funny anymore. Comedian Katt Williams though is still hilarious because of his flamboyant mannerism.

Durrell (Cube) and LeeJohn (Morgan) are petty and bumbling criminals who have to do 5000 hours of community service. Durrell’s ex is threathening to move to Atlanta with his son if he doesn’t come up with money. Cornered by situations, they decide to rob the neighborhood church that has just raised lots of money through offerings.

First Sunday

Ice Cube who always plays the same character in most of his movies once again plays a father role. It seems to be working because the movie watchers usually tend to sympathize with struggling fathers doing whatever he can for the sake of his kid, like Denzel’s movie John Q. It goes to show that blood IS thicker, in this case, it’s thicker than the law. Desperate times call for desperate for measures. How far would you be willing to go for the ones you care about and love?

The issues of social differences, morality and how the system works in some society are brought up in this movie. Although… the picture of Baltimore here is not as raw as what the TV series The Wire portrays.

Tracy Morgan is annoying. I didn’t like him even when he was on SNL. He’s the only annoying character in my favorite comedy series 30 Rock but I guess Tina Fey thinks she needs at least one stupid character who’d do anything and Tracy Morgan is it.
Nobody can understand the words that are coming out of his mouth unless there’s subtitles on.
Tracy’s role in FIRST SUNDAY, however, surprises me because in one moving scene he actually can show some tears. I’m like “What the?! That guy can actually act??”

Overall, this movie has some funny moments, thanks to Katt Williams, but it would’ve been even better if Tina Fey had written the script.
