HOW SHE MOVE Review

There are many movies about dancing out there, especially in recent years like Step Up and Stomp the Yard but what makes HOW SHE MOVE different, in my opinion, is that the story is grittier and more raw than the others. It may not have an R-rating but it does show… images of struggling life and what winning the competition could mean to some rather than just about winning or two dancers from different worlds falling in love.
Following her sister’s death from drug addiction, a smart high school student is forced to leave her private school back to return to her crime filled neighborhood. Faced with obstacles and people who don’t consider her the same, she rekindles the old love for step dancin’. Besides, her family could use the money from winning the competition to pay the expensive tuition if she goes back to boarding school.
Just like any other movie that has moves and mad dancing skills, I enjoy the choreography in HOW SHE MOVE. I don’t have the talent but I know what’s good when I see ‘em and this steppin’ thing portrayed in this flick is off the hook.
Can I say that? Is ‘Off the hook’ still considered a cool term to say something is real cool?
Anyways, it never ceases to amaze me how some people are just gifted with the ability to remember rhythms and synchronize in uniformity with the rest of the team…. it’s like crazy.
Watching every group showcasing what they got is one strong reason to watch this entertaining movie.
Like I’ve mentioned before, the story is powerful. If there was an Oscar category for this genre, this movie might definitely get the prize.
The family themes and about not sacrificing your friends can make you associate with the characters and want the story to go the way you have it in mind.
MTV Films continues the tradition of releasing inspiring projects in the beginning of the year, whether it be sports (Coach Carter), academic (Freedom Writers) or this.
And like most, HOW SHE MOVE also has a happy ending.
