OVER HER DEAD BODY Review

I’m glad I watched this movie for free at the world premiere in Hollywood, not just because I did get to see and talk to some of the stars that were there but because the movie was lame and so unfunny that I couldn’t wait get out of Arclight Dome Theater after movie was over. If there ever was… a top ten list of horrible romantic comedy films in the history of cinema, then OVER HER DEAD BODY might be in the top five. I still think Eva Longoria is drop dead gorgeous but this movie of hers is anything but.

Kate (Longoria) was supposed to marry Henry (Rudd) but she died on their wedding day, killed by an ice angel without wings. Ashley (Bell) was supposed to help Henry move on with his life but falling for him wasn’t part of the plan. Kate was supposed to take care of something before she could move on in the afterlife but figuring out what that something was may be harder than it looked. So she decided to sabotage her boyfriend’s relationship with Ashley the psychic.

Let’s start with the story, I thought it had potential. I really thought it would be like Ghost with a taste of humor instead of drama and Whoopi Goldberg. But what I don’t like about OVER HER DEAD BODY is that most of the jokes aren’t funny. In fact, they’re redundant and irritating. The whole time I was watching it, I wish the every character in that movie was a ghost so they could just leave me to watch something else instead.

The story is unoriginal, it’s one of those about letting go and moving on and allowing the one you love to be happy even if it means he or she is happy without you in the picture. Once again we see the male character running down the hallway inside an airport terminal to declare his love.

Nothing spectacular either about the visuals, the directing and maybe there’ll be something worth chuckling at from time to time because of course, Jason Biggs (American Pie) has a talent for physical slapstick humor. I don’t think he even knows that his career is going nowhere unless some miracle happens and the American Pie gang decide to come together for another installment which is probably not going to happen in the near future.

The only thing that I’m somewhat impressed about is actress Lake Bell’s performance in this movie as the girl who falls for Paul Rudd’s character. Lake surprisingly, in my opinion, has a decent comedic timing, the way she says her lines, the facial expression she uses to show her emotion in different situation. She may not be what I’d consider a gorgeous actress but with better projects and if she keeps up the good work, she might end up somewhere far more prestigious than this low rate romantic comedy.

The experience in the whole evening before and after the movie was better than the experience of watching the movie itself. I got to have a small chat with William H. Macy about a possibility of Wild Hogs 2. Some of the stars of Desperate Housewives were there. Actor Terry Crews was taller than I thought and seeing Jason Biggs was just like seeing another ordinary dork on the street.
Bottomline, come Valentine day, don’t celebrate it by watching OVER HER DEAD BODY.
