Rama’s SCREEN

I’m not much of a romantic comedy kinda guy but FOOL’S GOLD is one chick flick I could watch over and over again. It’s just a treasure of fun! Despite some of the silly and immature scenes, the movie gets under your skin after a short while and you’d find yourself giggling like a kid. First there were Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan… and then Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore… and now the chemistry belongs to Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson in their second collaboration since their first movie together How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, which I thought was very disappointing. FOOL’S GOLD on the other hand doesn’t dwell too much on the romance but doesn’t step away from it completely either.

Ben (Matt) and Tess (Kate) are a divorced couple. Tess can’t stand Ben’s childish attitude. She works in a big yacht owned by a millionaire named Nigel (Sutherland) whose daughter (Alexis) comes to visit for a vacation. An opportunity arises when Ben finds an ancient plate from a sunken Spaniard ship carrying gold hundreds of years ago. Unfortunately, he’s gotten himself indebted to some dangerous people and his rival, Moe (Ray) is after the same thing too. Ben and Kate has one thing in common, their love for finding lost treasure and the thrill of adventure. As they try to work together, an estranged romance is finally rekindled.

For us guys, the sight of Kate Hudson might just be as good as the chest full of gold they’re after. And female audiences would be wowed by the Matthew’s well known physique.
I need to get back in shape again.
Kate and Matthew have comedic timing that compliment each other. They’re perfect on screen.
The script is right for them.

Writer/co-director Andy Tennant picked great locations for the film set. The views of the island and the sea are just breathtaking, they add to the excellent performance of each actor who manages to catch our attention.
The dialogue and the lines are witty and fast paced.
Donald Sutherland’s role in this movie is one of a kind. Hearing him do British accent like he did for the movie Pride and Prejudice, is funny.
Actress Alexis Dziena looks cute and irresistible as the brainless daughter of Donald Sutherland’s character.
And who would’ve thought that British actor Ray Winstone (The Departed, Beowulf) can pull a Southern accent?! Them British always got tricks up their sleeves.

Let’s not forget about the action, I like how they make it seem like there’s always one coming right after another. Just when you thought it’s going to get resolved, some whacky problems suddenly get in the way and everything just blends into one enjoyable adventurous movie. Exciting is the word I’m looking for.
This is way better than National Treasure 2.

Whenever come Valentine’s day, if you want to rekindle that passion and sense of adventure with your loved one, this movie is the right ecstasy that would give you that natural high.
