BE KIND REWIND Review

This is a movie that plays with your imagination, man! This movie is way cool! It’s not the greatest you’ve ever seen and it’s not the worst either. It’ the kind that makes you able to be part of the plot, as confusing as that may sound. BE KIND REWIND is only for the kid in all of us, those of us who… still like to have silly fun and are open-minded. You can easily connect with the storyline and all the characters because they are simple, likable and unconventional
Jerry (Black) gets magnetized after failing to sabotage the electrical plant. His condition causes all the videos at Mike’s (Def) store to get erased. As the old owner is away trying to figure out the new thing called DVD, Mike and Jerry decide to remake all the lost movies. Their effort brings the neighborhood together.

Jack Black is the man! He’s still got that School of Rock attitude, you can easily notice that in this movie but it doesn’t get him too far astray from the role or the character that he’s supposed to play which is the best friend who’s a little off touch with what’s appropriate but his heart and his intentions are in a good place.
Mos Def is better in this movie than when he was in 16 Blocks.
This time, I could actually understand most of the words he says. He’s perfect as the guy who still believes in the old video store as the spot to bring the community and neighborhood together despite the changes all around them.
Danny Glover has the versatility that’s often under-appreciated by many. He can pull a comedy and drama successfully and at the same time captivate our attention to his presence on screen.
I can understand why the visuals aren’t all that spectacular because, of course, the story is for them to come up with creative props to make their own setting for their own little movie projects and that’s what makes the visuals in this movie out of the ordinary. It’s pretty cool to check out what they have to make to.. for example.. re-enact the scene from Men in Black where the two agents are driving fast in the tunnel upside down.
Filmmaker Michel Gondry has done it again and he has done real well with this one! I sure hope he’ll come up with more movie in the future that even though it may have a concept that’s out of this world, it still got heart and passion and everything that’s good.
Check out all their hilarious sweded trailers on BE KIND REWIND’s youtube. Their sweded clips are some of the funniest, silliest part of this movie. In the age of making your own movie, remakes all over the place, this one pays an excellent homage to that.
