You don’t see superhero films like this… at all. The Dark Knight (in my opinion) is a hero film that stands out from the rest of the hero films that have been released in the last 8 years. It’s dark, its gritty, and for once, actually very true to the comic in terms of character and environment.
People who are expecting a film of pure action and adventure this is not it. The Dark Knight separates from the usual superhero story formula by adding twists and turns to the story line that separates it from other films. It’s more like a dark crime drama movie than it is action adventure. And, to my opinion, is not a bad thing, as it is just like it’s comic counterpart.
While indeed a true sequel, this movie (despite it’s name) is not all about Batman. Whereas Batman begins is about Bruce’s journey to becoming the Dark Knight, this movie is about the whole entire City of Gotham. (Spoiler) Where the entire city, the higher ups, criminals, regular people, and Batman all fall victim to one man’s crazy and psychotic beliefs and ways… The Joker.
It was only until the end did I realize that the Joker was played by Heath Ledger… When I say that, this is not a role that he usually plays, and if he were still alive, Heath playing the bad guy should be on every producers list in my opinion. I have very high hopes for the Joker, and someone to play the role of chaotic psychopath was going to be a hard one. Heath nailed the comic version of dark, gritty, and one liner villain damn good! And is a must see just for that.
While I liked Batman Begins, the camerawork in that movie during the action scenes… not so much. I hate close camera’s and I am happy to say, the close camera syndrome is GONE! Cinematography is well done in this film.
In conclusion, The Dark Knight is a true superhero film that is like no other. Obviously, this movie was not made for kids, and kids who do watch it will probably not understand it for what it is. And for those expecting an action film, may not be so satisfied. The movie is long, and the story is deep, but if you are looking for a battle between a force of chaos (Joker) against order(Batman) and a great story to go with it, this is the movie to see!
I totally agree with Dexter. This movie was amazing. Never before have I seen a movie like this. I feel I need to see it again, it was just that good. I loved how there was more Batman than Bruce Wayne and a true story then just explosions. I was a little worried when I kept seeing trailers of things going boom, but the movie was so much more than that.
The cast was outstanding. Seriously, I did not think for a second that the Joker was Heath Ledger. I thought I was watching ‘The Joker’ in real life. But all the credit shouldn’t go to him. Aaron Eckhart was an amazing Harvey Dent/Two-Face. He did ten times better than Tommy Lee Jones. And Christian Bale outperformed himself.
This was seriously a monumental movie. I will always remember this, and certainly will buy it when it comes to DVD, after I watch it 5 more times in theaters.
It was different from the first one, that is for sure. The cinematography definitely shows a lighter side of Gotham since Batman has been cleaning it up. However, the few downsides I had with the movie were how they had faster cuts during the hand-to-hand fighting of the action sequences which made it a little difficult to see exactly what Batman did. I felt that the fighting scenes in Batman Begins were perfectly done. The only other negative I had toward the movie was how they introduced Two Face. He finally became two face at the last 45 minutes of the movie and Christopher Nolan tried to wrap up a main villain of the Batman series in that amount of time. They also didn’t show his duel personality (the part of him that is the Two Face) that is angered easily by thugs. I could be wrong, but if Gordan’s men already had nicknamed him “Harvey Two-Face” then it would have made more sense to show that other part of him that comes out from time to time.
Oh and I felt that they could have had a little more depth to Salvatore Maroni. He didn’t seem to have many lines during the movie for being the crime boss.
Other than that, I enjoyed the movie immensely. So much in fact, that I saw the midnight showing and went back the next day to pick up on foreshadowing and other things I had missed. The highlight of the movie (of course) is Heath Ledger’s acting. His mannerisms made his character even more fun to watch. I am a big fan of the Joker from the Batman comics, and how twisted his mind works. I was constantly anxiously awaiting each scene of the Joker so much so that I wanted to see more of him than the other characters. Heath Ledger definitely deserves an award.
