MIRRORS Review

This is not a Scary movie but it is pretty fun to watch. It probably won’t make you cringe but it will definitely amuse those of us who like horror genre. The concept is intriguing and it’s one of those… fright flicks combined with investigation of how it all came to be. I think what keeps me watching this is the interest in wanting to know what else can the mirrors do next because as long as there’s reflection, their powers are without limits. Like I said, it’s fun to watch.
An ex-cop takes a job as a security guard at a mall that got burned down a while ago. He starts noticing weird things and images from the mirrors. He soon figures out that the evil forces living in those mirrors have the capability of hurting anyone anywhere. Now he must save his family by figuring out what started the whole thing and destroy the mirrors once and for all.

I’ve never seen the Korean movie, Into the Mirrors, that this flick is based on but here’s the thing with any remake of Asian films, it’s mostly a miss than a hit. Sometimes Hollywood would get carried away and screw things up (The Grudge movies) and sometimes they get it right the first time but fail the next (The Ring). Either case, I think Hollywood with all its special effects can notch things up a level because growing up in Asia, I was never impressed by the horror movies there. I was always more into what Wes Craven had to offer.
MIRRORS is directed by Alexander Aja who recently remade the gore fest movie The Hills Have Eyes, which I thought was okay but could’ve been more frightening.
I consider this one, a step up for him. It has a decent story and the ending gives you that mystic, ghostly feeling ala The Sixth Sense.
Casting Kiefer Sutherland may not be such a bad idea after all. Besides, the character needs to be played by a Jack Bauer type anyway. Seriously, Kiefer throughout this film, is practically like Jack Bauer fighting evil spirits instead of terrorists. Cool stuff but at the same time, you gotta feel a little sorry for the fella, he’ll never escape the typecast, he will always the persona of the man who saves the world in just 24 hours.
I love Paula Patton (Swing Vote, Deja Vu) in this movie. She definitely looks sexy when wet and scared for her life. Which is a bit of a distraction because whenever scary moments take place, all you can think of is how great her body looks.
This movie does have lots of gore and blood and great visual effects. I especially like how Amy Smart’s character dies in this movie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that method done in other horror movies in the past. What a great idea to scare the hell out of the audience.
